Puppy Collar Buyer’s Guide
A collar is one of the first accessories we purchase for our puppies. If you choose to use a harness, a collar is still useful for identification purposes. A cute and unique collar around your puppy’s neck is also decorative and stylish. We have utilitarian collars and the bowties for extra flair. What you choose is dependent on the activity.
Hopefully, the one you decide to buy will last for a while and is in your desired price range. The options we have presented you with are affordable and durable. The most important thing is for the collar to do its job. So what should you be looking for? Read on and you will see!
What to Look for When Buying a Puppy Collar?
How long it lasts and the level of comfort the collar offers is all about the material. It’s vital that the material you choose is soft, smooth and SAFE. By safe we mean chemical-free and doesn’t snag or fade. Nylon and leather are the primary choices for dog collars, although sometimes polyester ones with blended materials can be found. For a puppy, we would suggest the softest of leather or smoothest of nylon for their tender skin.
Of course, we need the puppy collar to be as durable as possible. If it isn’t destroyed by the elements, we surely do not want our puppy to have a hand in its demise. Chances are your pup might not accept the new collar immediately, and we want the collar to stand up to the more aggressive chewers out there. Leather collars are harder to clean and easier to chew through, and the synthetic options absorb odors. The best and most durable collar needs to be lightweight, soft and chew-proof.
Next on the list is the size of the collar. Too small a collar will be extremely uncomfortable and choke your puppy. One that is too large is easy to squirm out of. Smaller collars are narrower than larger collars. This is to distribute the weight evenly and not dig into your pet’s neck.
An adjustable collar, usually the nylon or polyester ones, can save you the headache of getting the size perfectly. When the collar is fitted around your puppy’s neck, you should be able to fit two fingers in between. This will be the ideal circumference for maximum comfort and security.
Make sure the collar fits like a second skin. Your puppy shouldn’t be aware of the collar or bothered by it. The best collars are lightweight but durable and made of strong materials. They should definitely not be heavy enough to weigh your pup down.
Harnesses are generally better for outdoor walks, hikes or treks. It distributes the pressure and force throughout the torso and won’t choke your pup. If your puppy is very active and loves to lunge and pull, we would suggest a harness. The tamer fur babies can do well with a collar. For simple identification, you have free reign to choose any style that is aesthetically pleasing.
Types of Puppy Collars
This type is the simple leather or synthetic strap secured around your pup’s neck with a buckle. They are usually solid colored, patterned or customizable.
LED and Reflective
You might have seen this on someone’s puppy during a doggy play date. These LED collars usually have 3M reflective trim or an LED light sewn into or attached to them. It makes it easier to keep an eye on your puppy during night walks and for oncoming traffic to spot your pet from a safe distance.
Outdoor collars are made to withstand rigorous activity and elements. They should be waterproof, easy to clean and usually made from heavier materials.
Bark Collars are only recommended for fully grown dogs, and you should research into the subject if you are considering them.
Leather VS Nylon/Synthetic
Leather collars are usually non-adjustable. Unless you plan on replacing the luxury collar as your pet develops or just buying all the different sizes the seller offers, we suggest going for a leather option when your dog is mature.
Nylon and/or synthetic collars are cheaper options but also very durable. They are generally more lightweight and flexible, which makes it a more comfortable fit. These collars are generally adjustable, so one could last a couple of years before it needs to be replaced.
Getting new accessories and/or clothing on your puppy can be a real chore, especially if they aren’t used having anything on. Some buckles are easier to operate and others require a low-key wrestling match to get on your puppy.
We will introduce different kinds of closures to help you figure out which is the best for you.
These buckles are similar to ones you see on your backpack. Usually made of plastic, or eco-plastic from the more environmentally aware brands, these buckles are lightweight. It’s easier to snag your pup’s fur in these closures, so we recommend this for shorter-haired puppies or for trimmed fur babies.
These closures resemble a belt buckle and are often seen on leather options. Make sure the hardware is made from durable and rust-resistant material. It could take longer to get this type of collar around your puppy, so if you are lucky enough to have a patient pooch, this option is more secure than the quick-release.
Slip-on collars are usually seamless or closed with a ring. This is the easiest type to wrap around your pup’s neck, but make sure you adjust it to the appropriate size.
Does My Puppy Need a Collar?
Puppies are more rambunctious and haven’t learned the ropes yet. They are not familiar with your parental rules, which increases the chances of them running off and getting lost. A puppy collar can help with identification and give the kind person who finds your dear fur baby a way to contact you.
In some countries, like the UK, dogs are required to wear a collar with an ID tag out in public. If this law isn’t followed, fines up to 5000 pounds can be given to the owner!
For puppies, the best collars are lightweight and narrow. The less cumbersome it is, the higher the chance your puppy will accept it. Some collars adorned with rhinestones and extra ornaments can be very appealing aesthetically, but extra heavy. Refrain from buying an over-the-top collar like that for daily use because chances are, it won’t be comfortable for your puppy.
Even if you prefer a harness for daily walks, the collar can be used as a form of identification. We definitely won’t leave our house without our wallets, and it’s the same idea for our pups. God forbid they run off or disaster strikes, you can minimize the panic by knowing they have some form of ID.
Do not use choke chains or prong collars on your puppy. Some might think this drastic method of training is useful. In reality, it can severely damage your pet’s spine and throat. The same goes for smaller dogs, or all dogs in general, really.
Slip collars are used for training purposes. Do not leave this type of collar on your puppy unsupervised. They can get caught easily and pose as a choking hazard.
It’s best to remove the collar once in a while, especially if your dog is indoors. This gives their necks a break and their skin some room to breathe.
